"But what would I wear?!" - The Grinch

Figuring out what everyone is going to wear can feel like the hardest part of the whole process.

You do NOT need to copy an exact outfit.

You do NOT need to buy everyone a new wardrobe.

(although I'm absolutely supportive of you using this to buy something new that you feel great in)

You do NOT need to wear trendy clothes - wear what you feel GOOD in.

You do NOT have to be in all neutrals.

Below you'll find outfit inspiration, color & texture tips, and shoppable pieces from some of my favorite stores to help take the guesswork out of getting everyone dressed.

Think of these as a starting point to help you find pieces that feel like you and coordinate without looking too matchy. You might already have them in your closets. And because I know moms are busy (and most likely doing the shopping), I've linked directly through my ShopMy so you can browse, shop and build your outfits without opening 47 tabs. I've done the legwork for you.

You can shop by:

  1. Family Outfits - these are collections of items organized by color palettes (ex. family outfit #1 is browns, creams & denim for fall). You can mix and match clothing items for each person from the collection and still have coordinating outfits. Neutrals will crossover between collections but each outfit has a main color to work off of. I asked chat to give me family photo examples so you could see what this might look like when you put it all together. This doesn't need to be a shopping list. You can use pieces you already own, buy what you need or simply use it for color and styling inspo.
  2. Person - shop for each member of the family individually.
  3. Store - shop all at one store to keep the number of carts to a minimum.

I'm constantly adding new items and updating links so if you've stuck on what to wear, this is a great place to start.

**Disclaimer - I am not a stylist! I do see normal families for photos often and sharing some trends that I'm seeing**

Shop Family Outfits

WOMEN

My number one suggestion: pick YOUR outfit first. There is nothing worse than having everyone's outfit picked out and then having your options limited. Pick something you feel comfortable and confident in and set the tone on how casual or dressy the rest of the family goes.

You have two main options -

1. Dress for the season. A floral dress in the spring & summer is so fun and looks great with a tan. A fall camel or burgundy compliments the fall foliage perfectly. A winter red will go perfect on those Christmas cards. A smocked dress is a really flattering fit on everybody! Hill House makes one called the "Nap Dress" if you want to google and see what I'm talking about. Many other brands have less expensive versions. This is a great place to start especially if you're having a hard time dressing a postpartum body.... trust me I've been there!

2. Go neutral. Many of the women/moms that I photograph choose jeans and a white top, or a white/cream dress. It’s classic, casual and comfortable and works any time of year. In the summer this may be linen button up or white dress with a denim jacket. In the fall and winter, this might be a sweater with jeans and sneakers or boots.

Things to consider-

1. We move a lot during sessions. You may be chasing your little kids/dogs, standing, sitting, walking, etc. Can you sit or pick up your kids without worrying about your dress length? Walk comfortably? Are bra straps showing? CAN YOU BREATHE!?

2. Don’t feel like you have to dress up or buy new clothes. We want these photos to look like YOU. However, I fully support you feeling great in photos so use it as an excuse for shopping, getting your nails/hair/eyebrows done if you want to :)

Fall 2026 Women's Style

Here's what I've been seeing lately!

Dresses

White, creams, browns, eyelet and denim. Add a cardigan, jean jacket, or suede jacket on top. Tip: A smocked dress is a really flattering fit on everybody! This is a great place to start especially if you're having a hard time dressing a postpartum body.... trust me I've been there!

(Search "nap dress" and you should get some dupes of the Hill House version!)

Espresso Brown

Already seeing this EVERYWHERE! Dresses, sweaters, boots, pants, sneakers, etc. Lots of chocolate brown gingham, plaid and stripes too!

Jeans & Sweater

Classic & timeless outfit that also keeps you warm on the colder days. Trying to find the right fit of jeans, sweater and shoes can be tough! Dark denim is in style this fall if you're looking for a new pair of jeans.

Skirts

Sweater & satin skirt.

Sweater and mini skirt.

Denim top & flowy skirt.

Sweater & denim skirt.

Get skorts where you can if you'll be chasing little kids!

GIRLS

So you've picked YOUR outfit... if not - go do that first! Now it’s time to move on to girls if you have them. Little girl clothes are SO cute and you have lots of options. If you went for a neutral outfit, little girls are a great way to add some pattern and/or color into the mix. Keep in mind, you only want one loud outfit piece in the mix, but it’s great to change up the textures, colors and layers.

Here’s some examples of what this might look like-

  1. Summer- Mom in solid dress, girl #1 in floral dress, girl #2 in romper/set.
  2. Fall- Mom in white sweater, girl #1 in flannel dress/tights, girl #2 in top & denim jacket.

Dresses- Make sure to have bloomers or shorts under skirts and dresses. We move around a lot and want to keep those undies and diapers hidden :)

Layers & Accessories- Add in the bows, pigtails, denim jackets, vests, headbands, etc to complete the outfit.

Shoes- Sneakers or boots are always adorable. Sandals are popular for girls and can be so cute too. Just make sure you do a trial run before photos as these can be hard to walk in. Sometimes, kids can be bothered with open-toe shoes walking through wet grass, dirt, sand, etc.

Fall 2026

Girl's Style

Here's what I've been seeing lately! Cozy, classic, and a little nostalgic. Rich fall colors like burgundy, olive, chocolate brown, navy, cream, and denim—mixed with plaids, florals, knits, corduroy, and layers.

BOYS

Start with jeans or neutral pants and pick a top that compliments your color palette. Button up shirts, henley tees, waffle knit or pocket tees are a good way to elevate a

casual look while still being comfortable. Add in a pattern like plaid or stripes too!

Layers- Think about adding layers depending on the weather and season. This can make an outfit look more complete and add warmth. Vests, shackets, flannels or jackets are a great option to put on top.

For little boys- there’s nothing cuter than overalls! In the fall, these can be paired with a long sleeve and a beanie. In the summer, you can ditch the shirt underneath and let

their skin show. For boys under 3, shorts can come super long even if they are in their size range. Make sure to try on beforehand! You can always try shorts from the girl’s

section as long as they are cut in a unisex fit.

Shoes- You can’t go wrong with a white sneaker any time of year. My favorites are the Nike Court Legacy or Converse Velcro. Both of these are velcro, easy to get on and

wipeable. In the winter, boots are super cute! Make sure to try on sandals beforehand because they can be hard to walk in for little kids. Sometimes, kids can be bothered with open-toe shoes walking through wet grass, dirt, sand, etc.

Fall 2026

Boy's Style

Here's what I've been seeing lately! Similar to girls, we've got cozy, classic, and a little nostalgic. Fall colors like burgundy, olive, chocolate brown, navy, cream, and denim—mixed with plaids, stripes, knits, corduroy, and layers.

MEN

This is pretty similar to dressing boys! If you have multiple men or boys in your family, you don’t need to have matching outfits. Adding a variety of textures, patterns, and

layers will look coordinated without matching too closely.

Some examples might be:

  1. Fall- Dad in flannel, boy #1 in a neutral henley, boy #2 in a shirt with a vest.
  2. Summer- Dad in henley tee, boy in a short sleeve patterned button up.

Pants: Jeans or neutral colored pants in your color palette.

Tops: Button up shirts, henley tees, waffle knit or pocket tees.

Layers- Vests, Flannels, Quarter Zips, Shackets/Jackets, Bombers

Stay away from tops made of dry-fit material. This tends to really cling to the body- especially in the wind/cold... (aka nips show through!)
